I use to love watching the program "If Walls Could Talk" on HGTV. It was so interesting what some people found lurking within the walls of their old homes. Well, in this new piece of furniture, that we just bought, I found a very tiny old photo wedged in a drawer.
I gave you a little sneak peek of this piece the other day. Still not sharing how it looks in our house yet, but I will soon. Shirley of Housepitality Designs, was with me when I found it in fact that is why we went. She wanted to see where I shop while she was here. I am so glad we went. This piece had just been put out and was waiting for me. lol
I wanted to show you more of the beautiful details of this piece first. This is burled walnut.
I love the long brass hinges.
This is a picture I took of it in the antique mall. I had to show Mr. Savvy what I was wanting to buy.
He agreed to pay for half if I could get the price down and I did. As you can see there is a plaid fabric added to the back, but it works well in my room.
I know many of you are thinking that it will eventually get painted. Not this beautiful piece. Not ever. I don't paint over beautiful real wood.
There is a double locking key for every door and all the keys came with it.
Getting back to the tiny picture. I stuck it in this little frame and have it displayed on the piece. As you can see the name is French. Looks like a little girl (could be a boy though) maybe in the 1930's. The piece we bought is an antique French vaisselier. I think I spelled that right. We call it a hutch in America or Welsh cupboard in England. Whatever it is called Mr. Savvy and I both love it. Men don't understand changing something, but he can't even stop looking at it. That makes it a very good purchase and the price was right. I found similar pieces on ebay and on antique sites and the cheapest I found was $3700. We didn't pay anywhere near that.
Can't wait to show you the whole thing.
Oh my word, that is beautiful. I'd be getting up in the night just to peak at it for fear I had only dreamt I bought it. The little keep-sake picture is the icing on the amazing cake. I am looking forward to seeing it in your beautiful home and watching the changes you do. Enjoy! Deb
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I can't wait to see where you will put that. The china cabinet you already have is so pretty but you could put it anywhere in the house. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to see that you're not going to paint over this piece! This is a magnificent piece of wood work and the burl venears are lovely and in good shape. It appears as if one piece of wood was used for the side panel.
ReplyDeleteLovely, Lovely piece!! And yes - if furnature could talk!!
Wow, just the details on this piece are amazing, Kim. It sounds like you got a great deal, too. I can't wait to see the whole piece. It looks just beautiful. You always know it was a good move when the husband loves it, too. : )
ReplyDeletethis is beautiful, you know I'm not a fashion decor savvy person, I surround myself with what I love if it "goes with other things I have " is a lucky happenstance, my paint brushes and something to paint on make me happy but I love to read decorating blogs ( yours especially) and this post is why, for you its a deeper appreciation of what you find truly beautiful. The wood in this piece is amazing , all created by mother nature, in all its glory covering this with paint would be a crime, in my eyes and yours too.Its wonderful and that you and hubby share in the joy of it makes it even better!
ReplyDeleteOMG....am I allowed to say that. I'm so jealous. I would LOVE to find something like that. Great find, and I don't blame you for not wanting to paint it.

ReplyDeleteMary Alice
Oh Kim it's gorgeous and I know it must look perfect in your house! So glad you were able to get it!

Kim,
ReplyDeleteThe French word Janvier means January. My guess is the little girl's name is Eclair, and the photo was taken in January, 1934. The piece is beautiful - absolutely beautiful!!!
Hallelujah! I am so glad you are not going to paint this beautiful piece of furniture. I love this piece. My thoughts are that people painting every piece of furniture today will be the same ones stripping them in the future. LOL. Have a great day! I adore the little pic. Janvier is French for January.
ReplyDeleteNOw this is a piece you certainly could not have left behind! The wood is gorgeous and so masterfully crafted! Great eye, Kim. I'd keep that little picture with the french hutch!
ReplyDeleteKim what a beautiful piece! I can't wait to see where you put it in your home.So cool to have found an old photo! Yes there are some pieces that should not be painted.

ReplyDeleteKim-That is just a gorgeous piece. I LOVE the hinges and I am really glad you won't be painting this piece. Burled wood is so rare to see nowadays, I can't wait to see the full reveal- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteBurled wood...I would never paint it. No paint would look that sweet. You made a very good purchase. Smiles, Susie
ReplyDeleteI so totally agree with you about not painting good wood. I paint a lot of furniture, but I try to save and restore anything that I can. It literally hurts me to see some of the transformations that are done to beautiful furniture.
ReplyDeleteI love it too, Kim! Absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI loved If Walls Could Talk, also.
It looks like an amazingly beautiful piece! I can't wait to see it in your home!

It is gorgeous! How neat to find an old picture like that too. Now you have a piece with a story behind it.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, this is truly a beautiful piece and I am so pleased to know that you will not be painting it. I have loved many of the pieces you've transformed with paint and ASCP, but this one is very special the way it is. Looking forward to seeing where this gets placed in your beautiful home. I am a huge fan of your wonderful blog! Nan
ReplyDeleteKim, This piece is exquisite! I am so pleased that you won't be painting it; I do love painted pieces but not when they are antiques and such beautiful wood. Great find! Can't wait to see where you put it.
ReplyDeleteNoreen
Oh my, the hutch is stunning!
ReplyDeleteThat's beautiful and the photo too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment, and I turned off the moderation. I only had it set for posts that were older than 14 days, but I guess it doesn't work that way.
This looks like a gorgeous piece!
ReplyDeleteWow, it's gorgeous, Kim, what a fantastic find! I don't blame you for not wanting to paint it. I love the picture that you found, too. I recently bought an old sideboard and all I found in it was someone's stocking and paper from a couple of panty liners! I guess they used it for a dresser. I like your find better! ;D
ReplyDeleteGorgeous piece. I love it, such beautiful detail. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteThis is an absolutely gorgeous piece!
ReplyDeleteKim,
ReplyDeletethat piece has lots of wonderful detail. I think you found a one of a kind piece. Can't wait to see where you are using it and how you are decorating it. Now if you can find something like that, why can't I find a simple shaker style corner hutch?
I adore painted furniture but that piece is gorgeous as is. I love the pattern of the wood. What a find!
ReplyDeleteKim, that is absolutely gorgeous!!!!! I know it is beautiful in your sitting room! I can't wait to see it all decked out with your things! The picture is just a bonus! Don't you wish it could tell it's stories???
ReplyDeleteThat piece is stunning and no wonder you both love it. Such wonderful details. How charming to find the little photo. Janvier means January so probably 1934. It looks like the text to the right might be Lyons. I am sure you will enjoy decorating it.
ReplyDeletekim, it's so beautiful!!! i might be a tad jealous, but so glad it went to a good home!
ReplyDeleteKim, this is a gorgeous piece. Glad it went home to live in your beautiful home. Can't wait to see more details.......Sarah
ReplyDeleteThere was a reason why I wanted to go to visit that antique shop!!...That piece was just waiting for you ... to bring it home ... as you had the perfect place for it!....The details of the vassilier are incredible... and the woodgrain of burled walnut is exquisite...Can't wait to see the treasures you will have displayed...the person in the picture approves of their new home!!
ReplyDeleteOh my, how beautiful. The old photo really adds an element of mystery. I love it.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you are not painting this piece. Recently, I have seen way too many nice pieces of furniture ruined with chalk psin.
ReplyDeleteit is stunning...no that is not a piece to paint, that is for sure!
ReplyDeleteExquisite! Really a stunning piece, Kim!...Christine
ReplyDeleteGorgeous piece, and I breathed a sigh of relief when you said you wouldn't ever paint it. :)
ReplyDeleteLove all the details in the carving and I especially like the door hinges. The little photo is a perfect thing. Don't you wonder who's child it was, and what her life was like?
I love it. My husband and I bought one from Sweden and it is over 100 years old. The person we bought it from told us she paid 2200 for it and felt it was a good bargain. I didn't pay anywhere near that either. In fact I paid so little for it I would say it was a steal. Not sure why she decided to sell, but wow, I am the winner!
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent piece, Kim. The burled wood and nice long piano hinges are great. It's icing on the cake to find the French photo.
