A few weeks ago I mentioned that I was stripping a piece of furniture.Yes, that's right stripping not painting. I thought I could strip an old sofa table back down to the original pine, but it didn't quite work out as I hoped.
I was kind of going for this look, but my pine table was still just too orangey and some places became very white and dry from stripping it.
This is mine after stripping it. There was still a lot that needed to come off these legs, but we gave up.
This is an old picture of how it looked when I painted it a bluish gray and put in in the master. Boy, has this room changed. Fun looking back and seeing how much it has changed.
Another old picture shows when it was white. Then furniture got moved around when I got the drop leaf table and this poor table was placed in the garage. Not such a good place for a piece of Stanley furniture.
So after the bare wood thing didn't work I grabbed my can of French Linen Annie Sloan chalk paint and painted it again. Mr. Savvy had helped me strip the table and then came in and saw it painted again and just rolled his eyes. That happens a lot around here.
I waxed the top with dark wax to age it some since it looked way too new. I love how it brought out the wood grain since it was bare wood.
On a whim I painted the knobs in Tricycle Red Miss Mustard Seed Milk paint and Mr. Savvy wasn't so sure about the bright red. I wasn't loving it much either unless I was putting it in a child's room so I toned them down with some black guilder's paste.
The drop leaf table that was on this wall in the great room has been replaced.....
Where did the drop leaf table go, you asked? You will have to wait and see.
Be sure and come back tomorrow for another fabulous guest poster's "favorite room".

I have been working on an old school-house desk for my son and I know how you feel. Stripping paint is hard work and I felt like I never got it all off. But I do love the way your table looks now!
ReplyDeleteI'm always moving furniture from one room to another…love the way it switches up the feel of a home. Can't wait to see where your drop leaf table ended up.
ReplyDeleteIt looks gorgeous, Kim. And I've said it before and I'll say it again...you are the vignette whisperer. I think you should do a post showing the steps to creating a great vignette. People would eat that up. Like you need any help coming up with blog topics...HA! ;)
ReplyDeleteI love it...it turned out absolutely gorgeous!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat change Kim, I've always loved that table. It looks great with it's makeover and I love the knobs a different color! Pretty vignette too!
ReplyDeleteLove the look of this table. Styled to perfection!
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
The table is perfect there!!...Love the color/finish you chose...and really love how you staged the items beneath the table...Beautiful...beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteSometimes wonderful things do happen from the unexpected, the unplanned. :-))
ReplyDeleteit's gorgeous, love the painted look just as much as the bare look.
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful in the new paint color Kim.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! And, I like it in place of the drop leaf table. It shows off your accessories better.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful table, Kim. I'm glad it got out of the garage. The new color is so pretty. I like French Linen myself. Looking forward to seeing where the drop leaf table wound up.
ReplyDeleteThat final picture is magazine worthy! I love the new color with the contrasting red knobs!
ReplyDeleteI do understand. Eyes roll around here too.....
ReplyDeleteI so love French Linen...and the red knobs are adorable....great idea.

Oh my! You and I are just moving things around all the time, aren't we?! LOL! I like the color you chose for that table. Looking forward to seeing where the other table went next.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Kim! I have a table that I saved from the in-laws garage that I stripped and then gave up on the legs! Like the table in white but I love it now and the new placement is perfect. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh so fabulous!! Love the tricycle red accent. It's perfect!!
ReplyDeleteLove the table Kim and the gorgeous vignette.
ReplyDeleteLove seeing the progression of the "nine lives" table!
ReplyDeleteLoving the new look!
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny. I love that you are not afraid to jump on something and paint it. There are about three pieces I really want to paint, my four poster bed is one thing. eek!
ReplyDeletei love how this table turned out. This is inspirational to me. I love how you accessorized it, too.
That looks really awesome Kim! Gosh I don't know how you do all this stuff. I am having troubles keeping afloat these days. I even missed my favorite party:( Hoping to get my head on straight again. That table looks super there! perfect size.
ReplyDeletePaint stripping. I tried that once! It was enough.... Your piece is beautiful though... I luv the way the wood grain shows through the paint. I am in the process of distressing the pieces I showed in my last post.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration.
Hugs, Gee
its beautiful, love the color, i smiled when you said the mister rolled his eyes, seems to me he does do that a lot!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove every bit of it!!BEAUTIFUL!!! I purchased a drop leaf table at an antique market a couple of weeks ago not really knowing if I had a place for!! The price was just too good to pass up!!! I am really looking forward to seeing what you do with your drop leaf table:)
ReplyDeleteAnother awesome transformation, Kim! I love this color on there (and, LOL, I can just see Mr. Savvy rolling his eyes ... that happens a lot around here, too)! Ha. The knobs are a great touch, too ... and, love its new home.
ReplyDeleteKim Love Love Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteMy bedroom set is by Stanley also and I'm looking to do it in a gray with a antiqued look so some brown shows through, Thank You for Sharing
It's gorgeous! love it :)
ReplyDeleteI love it! and oh yeah, I've been there before too... sometimes it just doesn't turn out the way you envision. The key is to not give up, but be willing to give it another go. Great job. Little Bit from www.DecorateWithaLittleBit.com
ReplyDeleteI love a table that has gone through multiple transformations. I love the latest. Great job as always.

Really like the latest look best of all.
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend
I really like how your table looks now and love the red accents. perfect!
ReplyDeleterita
I like that table there much better. The other table seemed so dark against the wall. Very pretty painting, Kim!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
It looks great, I love it painted and the vignette is perfect! But, this is exactly why I haven't painted my furniture and cabinets, once it's done you're pretty much committed to it...permanently. Painting is easy peasy, stripping is not.
ReplyDeleteI love the red knobs! What a wonderful surprise with the Linen paint! Can't wait to see what you do with the table!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it, Kim!! I think it looks much better than the PB one! I'll be looking forward to seeing where the dropleaf is residing now. ;) blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteBeen there, done that...put so much time and effort into stripping only to find what was underneath wasn't worth staining.
ReplyDeleteJust out of curiosity, did you give it a wash with mineral spirits and steel wool after stripping it? Sometimes the wood looks better after stripping with a good rub-down with mineral spirits. Regardless, it looks great now.
Looks great!
ReplyDeleteKim, I admire the way you so easily change things in you home. The sofa table looks fabulous in the foyer. I would try just about anything NOT to have to strip paint! We are now PAINSTAKINGLY peeling wall paper off of the foyer walls... I just don't like to the "removal" process!
ReplyDeleteYou table wears french linen so well!
Bet that little drop leaf squeeled with happiness, cause it knows it's the next victim of Kim's ever traveling paint brush! LOL!
ReplyDeleteLove the sofa table. It's very pretty.
hugs
Sissie
You are definitely the best vignette creator in blogland.
ReplyDeleteMr. Savvy is a real trouper, but I'm sure he appreciates the care you put into your home. I love that table and it looks great in its new colours. The baskets and vignette under the table are my favourite part.
ReplyDeleteLovely! And such a nice vignette!
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
I hate it when a project doesnt go as planned. Your table turned out great though.
ReplyDeletePure genius using that toned down red on the knobs!
ReplyDeleteThat outcome was definitely worth a few eye rolls! Looks great in her new home by the stairs.
ReplyDeleteKelly
Yet another gorgeous transformation, Kim! It looks great in your foyer.
ReplyDeleteThis is in the great room not the foyer.
ReplyDeletethanks
I do love the new color on the table, however, I really loved your white bedroom. What does your bedroom look like now?
ReplyDeleteTo bad you had to go to all that work of stripping the piece first:( I do love how it turned out though with the paint. I think you still achieved the PB look:) Great vignette on top and underneath it too:) What ever you do always looks just perfect!
ReplyDeleteA lot of work~ but it looks darling painted~ and love it in that spot too! Looking forward to seeing where the table went! :)
ReplyDeleteThis was a lot of work but the table came out great. I love the vignette and those pieces underneath especially those pillows.
ReplyDeleteCynthia
The only thing I hate more than painting is stripping. I say Mr. SSS is lucky you are willing to do that yourself to get the look you want.
ReplyDeleteBliss
The table really looks nice with the chalk paint.
ReplyDeleteI like how that ended up! It's really cool that the wood grain came through since you went to all the work of stripping it!
ReplyDeleteYou amaze me at all you get accomplished and how easily you can move things around your home and they look FABULOUS no matter where you have them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish you lived close to me, I would be picking your brian constantly:):) XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteLove the table and think it fits that spot much better than the drop-leaf, though I really like it as well.especially how it gives you a better opportunity for that beautiful vignette underneath. Love the bottles and basket and pillows....really good! Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteOh I love the table!!! I really LOVE the bottles!! Are they from France?? Love this post thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteI actually just want to hang out with you for a day and see what you are up to? Just walk around your house and listen to your brain figure out what is next....ha ha. I really like that console table there especially how it allows you to add items underneath.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful color on the table. It looks great! Now I to go look at your other projects.
ReplyDeleteWell, I was going to recommend that you drench the stripped down piece in linseed oil and let it set for a good 30 days or so, periodically buffing, but since you evidently painted it in the meantime, useless comment. I didn't think the stripped table looked "orangy" BTW. Just needed a bit of toning down with some whitewash mixed with - taupe, perhaps -- very watered down. After the 30 day wood restoration period with the linseed oil.
ReplyDeleteHi, I have found your project from Miss Mustard Seed's blog. You did a wonderful job, and you remind me so much of my Sister who lives in CA. Like you, she is never afraid to try anything, and will move/shift furniture around in her home at the drop of a hat! I think the darkened red knobs just make this piece. I agree with other posters, you are very talented when it comes to staging vignettes. I have enjoyed my visit so much!
ReplyDeleteIs there anything you can't do? Every piece of furniture, vignette, room change, etc. is perfect.
