I have heard so many times folks say that every room should have some black in it and that black grounds a room. Well, I'm not sold that every room needs black, but I do love the look of black furniture and decided to update a piece by painting it black.
I decided to paint the bench in my great room black. I love caning and love how this turned out.
I had been wanting to do this for some time and finally took the plunge last week.
I used Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Typewriter and just quickly brushed it on.
I was truly hoping it would start peeling and I even had used some Vaseline in places so it would help resist.
It did peel pretty good here, but most of the bench got a good sanding.
After all the sanding was done I rubbed the Hemp Oil on all over. I love using the oil. It is so easy.
I am happy with the way it turned out. It really looks like an antique with wear from many years of use.
You can see the before here of the last time I painted it. I liked that, too, but was ready to see it dressed in black.
Hope you will come back tomorrow for another guest blogger's fab favorite room.
Enjoy the long holiday weekend!
Every room needs a LBD - or a Little Black Piece of Furniture! She's ready to party!

It looks perfect! I agree that there needs to be a little black, and at one time I went overboard with lots, but now It is just a piece here and there....

It looks great, Kim. I love how the detailed areas stand out. I have to go back and look at what it looked like before.
ReplyDeleteI like both versions, but the black pops more against the lighter wall. It really does look well aged.

What a gorgeous piece Kim!LOVE that rooster pillow too! I have not used hemp oil yet.Do you just use a rag to apply it and then buff it out?I would think the oil would go a long way as opposed to wax.

ReplyDeleteHi Kim, yes you are a brave girl! I love your moxy with this piece! I just painted French bistro bar stools black for my kitchen, and am getting up the nerve to take my sander to them, they just look too new for me...I am looking for some French enamel numbers for the backs to add a little interest...if anyone has a source, I would be very appreciative, N.xo
ReplyDeleteI love the way it turned out.
ReplyDeleteThis redo might be a toss up for me. I liked the before, and I like the after.

I love it black but I'm really surprised that you did it! I love some black in every room but you know me, sometimes too much color!!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to mention that I've missed your blog in my Reader I use since you went to the shortened feed. I was going to ask if you can do like Rhoda and extend the feed a little to include just the first picture and snippet of your post. It helps all of us that use a Reader for blogs not to miss your post when we are paging through all the blogs each day.
Have an awesome holiday weekend!
The bench is stunning and I love, love, love that pillow you got at the HP market. I read all the comments and seems there is a huge interest in Hemp Oil, how it's used, what are the steps, what is the end result, does it have to be buffed, etc., etc. I'm tired of waxes - they are so time consuming and you have to work yourself to exhaustion. Would you educate us and give us a tutorial, please.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Carolyn
Kim, this bench is gorgeous, I am loving the black. Great job as always! I am in love with that pillow....still!
ReplyDeleteCynthia
