After I won this wonderful bag filled with Annie Sloan products at the Haven Conference I knew I would have to find some things to paint or in my case repaint.
I was walking through the great room and spotted my victim perfect piece.....the coffee table.
Here are some close ups of how it looked before. This table was painted with latex paint and distressed before I knew about chalk paint. So it was due to be refreshed. The color before was a green color. I believe I used Georgian Green by Benjamin Moore. I had painted the top a grey color.
I have never followed any instructions when painting a piece of furniture before, but I grabbed one of the Annie Sloan books I won and flipped through it and thought I would try to recreate a finish that was in the book.
So I painted the entire table with a coat of French Linen and then followed the next steps of using the clear wax and then a wash of 50% each of Paris Gray and Old White diluted with water. And yes, I paint wherever the piece of furniture is.
:)
You brush on the diluted mixture over the waxed finish and then immediately wipe it back off. I loved how the legs turned out. The wash was left in the grooves.
This is before the wash.
I loved the look of the light finish, but when all was done the tone was totally wrong for my great room. It was way too cool of a grey with my warmer toned whites on the walls and bookcases. It made those look too yellow. So I knew I had to fix it. I pulled out my tinted black wax and went to town adding it and that really gave it a much better look. Kind of looks like stone.
So when something doesn't turn out right the first time just try something else or repaint it.
After all, it's only paint.
It looks great Kim. I love the color.

Fabulous post, Kim! LOVE the technique and what a great lesson about fixing what does not come out to our liking! I really love the finish. It would look great in my living room! Wanna trade?
ReplyDeleteIt's very pretty:)
ReplyDeleteThe wash looks great. I love how versatile and expressive all the paints are now. You can really do so much playing and get creative finishes!
ReplyDeleteYep, it's only paint is right. That looks great...really nice!
ReplyDeletelove the new look, Kim. Grays can be tricky. this is the perfect warm gray, which is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteLuv how it turned out Kim. You took a technique and made it yours! The outcome.. a luvly grey.
ReplyDeleteAs an artist I am drooling over your brushes :-)
Hugs, Gee

Kris
Looks great. I have so many pieces of furniture to paint....not sure where to start :)
ReplyDeleteKim it's lovely!!!!! Hugs P.S. please tell me you shared this at my hop today :-)
ReplyDeleteIt turned out beautifully, Kim. I have a coffee table about the same size with similar legs that I painted black a few years ago, also before chalk paint hit. It is starting to show some wear and I've been thinking of repainting it. You've certainly given me something to think about.
ReplyDeleteIt looks terrific in its new "coat." I'd be afraid that I wouldn't know how to fix it, but you knew exactly what to do. Impressive!
ReplyDeleteYour table turned out wonderfully. I love the color. I have never used that paint but will need to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Patty at Home and Lifestyle Design

ReplyDeleteLooks great Kim, it's fun having a piece of furniture you can paint a gazillion times. For me, it's therapy Have a great afternoon.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on winning all that Annie Sloan stuff! I would want to paint something with that too. Your coffee table looks nice in its new color.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty Kim!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Cindy
Nice change. I does have a much warmer feel.
ReplyDeleteLove your carefree attitude about finding pieces to paint! I have been chalk painting several things this week and found as I too try to incorporate a bit of gray into our home, I have to be careful because of the warm tones in our house. The dark wax really helps in this.
ReplyDeleteLove the washed effect, so pretty on your table! Such a different look than French Linen on its own.
I love it and think it looks great next to your reds! I have used that combination and a few others with French Linen and Paris Grey around my home and to take away the coolness, did exactly what you did. I added a dark wax. The tone is always perfect after that last step.
ReplyDeleteYou always create the best paint finishes!!!...The table looks great and you are really good when you can paint the piece in the room that it is in...makes you a real pro!!!...
ReplyDeleteLove! I just posted an Ann Sloan makeover too! Let me know what you think!
ReplyDeleteHave an awesome day!

The chalkboard paint is so pretty. I love how the table turned out. I so want to try this paint.
ReplyDeleteBig beautiful table, Kim. Love the new color. You make it all look so easy.
ReplyDeleteWell, it looks great now. It is kind of disappointing sometimes when you go to all the work to redo something and then you don't LOVE it when you are done. You are right-paint is only paint and can be easily changed- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteLove your pretty custom color! :) I'm sure you're on the hunt for the next victim!
ReplyDeletei love this color, I painted our china cabinet this color! Your coffee table is beautiful, what a great look!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you just go with the flow Kim, if at first you don't succeed, redo it til you do! It looks wonderful in it's new finish!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful finish..thanks for sharing the recipe:)
ReplyDeleteThis is a little off topic, but I love how you're working with the red sofa. I have often felt "stuck" with my red love seat, but am inspired to see how you use it with neutrals.
ReplyDeleteI love the new look on your coffee table Kim, perfect color choice!

It looks great. I've always thought you should start buying some thrift store furniture and refinish it to sell at a boutique or something like that. Put your mad painting skills to work for you!
ReplyDeleteIt's just fab!
ReplyDeleteKim...i love how it came out before and after...I'm going to have to try that new treatment...Don't you love Annie Sloan paint?
ReplyDeleteYour coffee table looks pretty Kim. The finish looks great!

It's beautiful! I took on the 'it's only paint' attitude last week when I decided to paint/distress my pantry door. Turned out pretty well. Still tweaking it a bit but it sure added some character to my kitchen!
