I'm thrilled that I get a chance to share with Savvy Southern Style readers about my favorite room! Thank you so much, Kim, for having me!
I'm Jamie and I blog over at So Much Better With Age. I like old stuff as the name suggests. Vintage items are my favorite! I'm also a neat freak so that doesn't mean I like old and dusty, I just like old or old looking stuff and please no clutter!
My favorite room I'm sharing with you is my living room!
Why is my living room my favorite room in the house?
That's easy - because it's the only room that's done!
I'm sure you know how I feel. I LOVE to decorate and do DIY projects and then redecorate some more. But there's nothing more gratifying than having a finished room.
Now when I say "done", I don't mean "done" forever. Just for now. When my home is upside down, it feels good to look at this room. Check out my adjoining family room complete with longest baby gate in the world.
When the toys of this family room are driving me bananas, I just turn my head to the left and stare at this room.
Now it hasn't always been this put together. When we bought it, it looked like this:
We took down the wall between the living room and family room. Of course we also took out the 80s carpet and painted everything. I spray painted that peach marble fireplace {gasp!} as a temporary solution and four years later it's still there in perfect condition.
That window was just screaming for a window seat! We got rid of the bannisters and rounded out the steps too.
I had the cushions made and the tops of the bench lift up to reveal storage! It's a good spot to hide seasonal decor and Christmas presents...shhh.
Hello rounded steps!
I found the most difficult thing to tackle was bookshelf styling! I can't tell you how many times I've styled and restyled them. Too many times! I don't like a lot of clutter so I wanted add something lovely and meaningful but at the same time not overcrowd the shelves.
I have an old radio, lots of books, some framed photos of my babies, brass candlesticks, metal trough with shells.
I love the little chicken wire baskets I found at a garage sale. I turned them upside down and added them to my stacks of magazines. There's more books, candles and photos.
My birth mother painted that portrait of me and my son. So talented!!
The bottom cupboards store all my photo albums. It's great to have some hidden storage.
I don't think you need to spend a lot of money on decor items. Next week I'll be sharing on my blog where I sourced all my items from and you'll be surprised at how little I spent on all of it.
It's the best place to sit with a book and have a cup of tea and Christmas mornings are the best in this room!
Thank you so much for joining me on this tour. I hope you can stop by my blog and say hi! Have a great day!
Thank you, Jamie for sharing your beautiful living room.

Jamie, I've visited your blog and remember this room. You were so wise to open it up, redo the step down, and add the window seat. Beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty room! Love this series, Kim.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful living room! It's so spacious and serene. I love the calming neutral colors she's used. Love her chairs in there. The toys piled up behind the baby gate reminded me of the days my front sitting room was converted into a play space when my boys were little.
