Hi there Savvy Southern Style friends! I'm Vanessa from the blog At
the Picket Fence and I am so beyond thrilled to be visiting with you
here today! When Miss Kim asked me to share my favorite room I knew
immediately which one I would choose but then I hesitated.
Because, there's something so deeply personal about sharing a master
bedroom, you know? In fact, I can guarantee you that if I told my
husband that I was asked to share my favorite room and I decided to
share our bedroom that he would say, "you better believe it's the
favorite room in the house!" ;-)

But, the thing is, the fact that it IS so deeply personal is exactly
why this is my favorite room. This space captures my style like no
other room in my home. It's a mix of traditional and french country
with a touch of bargain basement.
And it holds some of my most cherished possessions.
Like the armoire we purchased for our first home 15 years ago. When
we moved to this house 5 years ago it found the perfect new spot here.
And I had to promise that I would never make my husband (and our
friends!) haul it up a winding flight of stairs again!

On my side of the room, an over-sized round table with a
fringed no-sew drop cloth skirt makes the perfect
nightstand.

Our bed was hand-carved for us by my amazingly talented father-in-law
as a wedding gift. Aren't those details incredible?

It even has our monogram in the foot board. And yes, we do sleep on
the same side as our initials!

I firmly believe that a master bedroom should provide you a place to
retreat from the world. It should be the place you feel the most
relaxed, the most safe.
Oh sure, there are days when the bed is piled high with laundry
waiting to be folded.

And the settee (which I found on Craigslist!) at the foot of the bed
is often covered with drawings that a certain little miss likes to
leave for us as 'surprises'.

And the chair in the corner has seen it's fair share of dirty socks.

But, my version of a retreat allows room for piles of laundry and
little drawings from my favorite girl and dirty socks...as long as
they find their way into the hamper at some point!

My version of a retreat has a hand-me-down desk covered in favorite
photos and a framed poem written by my grandmother to two little girls
who had moved all the way across the country leaving behind lonely
swings in her backyard.

It has a big basket filled with blankets ready and waiting for a
Sunday afternoon nap.

My retreat has details that I see every single day of my life and have
become like old friends.
Comfortable.
Comforting.

It might not be for everyone. It might not be your taste or your color
palette or your style.
But, that's ok.
.

It doesn't have to be. Because this is MY retreat.
And it's definitely my favorite room!
Thank you again for allowing me to share my heart and my home with you
today. I had the privilege of meeting Kim in person last summer and
she is every bit the beautiful, warm, welcoming and talented woman you
get a glimpse of each day here. It's an honor and blessing to call her
my friend!
Thank you, Vanessa, for sharing your beautiful favorite room with us. You and I actually met two summers ago and then again last summer at the Haven conference. I am so glad we have been able to meet in person. I love meeting bloggers face to face. Vanessa and Heather are two of the sweetest bloggers out there. I hope y'all will take the time to visit
At The Picket Fence as most of you probably already have, but maybe there are some new ones who haven't yet.
Miss any past favorite rooms? You can catch up
here.
Have a super weekend!
