Hi y'all! I'm Christy from Our Southern Home, and I am overjoyed to be here today. Many thanks, Kim, for inviting me to share my favorite room with you today.
I really had to think about this one! You see....I really have 3 favorite rooms. Our kitchen, screened porch and family room are all contenders. I decided to share our family room since it is winter.
This room has a real wood burning fire and there is just nothing like it. I love the smell and crackle of a real fire. It does have a gas starter which makes it much easier. Notice the area of the TV. This has been a huge sore thumb in this room. There has been some regret over the last 9 years. I didn't want a built-in. I had hopes of finding some sort of armoire to house the TV. It never happened. Everything that would fit in the space had doors that would swing open over the fireplace....I didn't want that. To do pocket doors would mean a smaller TV. GRRRR.......9 years later and I wished I'd just had cabinetry built. I'll share my recent change in just a bit. It really made this my favorite room! The TV is sitting on a mahogany piece with all the components on the floor. Notice that ugly sub-woofer on the floor! It just looks sloppy. Yep...over 9 years like this!!!
These 2 photos were taken with a wide-angle lens. The room appears much larger than it is! The buffet on the far wall is part of our dining room suit from our old house. It was a 70s ranch where we converted a living room to a dining room so there was lots of wall space. Our current dining room is not large enough for it. We placed it here and it works! These couches are about 18 years old and are on their 2nd fabrics. They are of good quality and have stood the test of time through 2 teenagers and pets. I'd love to do some slip covers to use in the spring and summer.
I love to collect vintage oils. You can find them very inexpensively on EBay.
Our mantel is one of my favorite things to change for the seasons. Here it is for summer. It is one of my favorites. I love to borrow from other areas of the home. I like to decorate with a combination of new, antique and thrift store finds. I find that they blend nicely together and give a unique character.
Here is the mantel for fall. I love French Country style and these sconces are my absolute favorite in the house.
Christmas....we went a little over the top this year!
This is how it looks for winter. Do you notice a little something new peeking out on the left side?
I like simple after all the months of various holiday decorating. I'll leave this up until I decorate for spring. It starts feeling springish mid-March here. We can still have some cold days in the south though. We have actually had one of the coldest winters on record this year.
It took over 9 years to make a decision on a TV cabinet, but I think it was worth the wait. I finally found the perfect piece on Craigslist the first of the new year. It is an antique buffet that I scored for $99! I painted it in Annie Sloan Chalk paint. I'll be sharing the entire project soon! It is a perfect fit with those French Country lines that I adore!
We've been living with it for several weeks now. My hubby didn't want me to distress it so I left it alone. He knew I couldn't stand it. I do plan to distress just the edges lightly. I'd like some of the stained wood to show through. It won't be too dusty since it has already been waxed. I'll just be sure to cover the electronic components.
Snuggling up with the family and watching TV by the fire is our favorite thing to do in the winter.
You'll find us feasting on S'mores.
Here is a little peek into our kitchen.
You will find dried hydrangeas from our yard all over the house. I love to use them. This container is perfect for them. In years past, it has held crayons and other art supplies for the kids when they were little.
I use family pictures everywhere. I added this winter picture from a snow from a few years back.
The rows of French doors in the family room open up to the screened porch. This becomes our family room in warmer months.
I enjoy the cozy, winter months... the fire, blankets and family time. It may be a no-no for some, but we have also been known to eat a dinner or two in here on the weekends while movie watching.

DeleteSo pretty. I especially love the wall mirror near the back of your sofa. Your room has a traditional/country french feel to it that I could live with forever.
ReplyDeleteThanks so very much, Connie! We picked that mirror up over 10 years ago in Southport, NC. Love the unique shape. Have a lovely week!!! ~Christy
DeleteWhat a gorgeous room.
ReplyDeleteI can totally identify with the television thing.
Our kids just bought dad a television and it is in the living room. We did not have one for 13 years because the two of us rarely watch tv, but with both kids living near us now, they want a tv when they are visiting. I HATE looking at it and am looking for the right piece to hide it when not in use.
Yes, the TV thing can be a pain, but in our home it is a necessity! LOL! I suggest being on the lookout on CraigsList! Not sure of your space, but dressers make a great TV cabinet! ~Christy
DeleteBeautiful room Christy. Just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteKris
Thanks bunches, Kris!!!! ~Christy
DeleteSuch a warm and inviting room!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Mary Ann!! ~Christy
DeleteChristy, I so understand your sub woofer blues! Ours is hidden behind a love seat! It may have been a long wait for the perfect cabinet but you found it! We bought a cabinet to hold our components, but the tall receiver wouldn't fit in the cabinet. Because it sat on the top, one of our cats threw up on it and shorted it out! Had to replace that expensive thing!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Jane! My son really scratched the shelves putting in the heavy, awkward components, but you can't see them since they are covered. Those receivers are so big and bulky. It just fits in there with all the cords in the back of it. The sub woofer would not fit! It is on the floor behind the cabinet. At least it is hidden! So understand the cat thing. I miss mine so much!! She passed away at 25, 3 years ago. Big hug friend!!! ~Christy
DeleteChristy, I love your living area, your décor, and the architectural accents in the rom are beautiful! Love, love, love your three French doors going into your screened room, and the big windows over the French doors (deep breath) are stunning! How cute are the tiered S’mores and your antiques buffet is so pretty and the perfect size! I really enjoyed this tour. Thank you Kim for sharing, I’m heading over to Our Southern Home!
ReplyDeleteOh, Charlotte!!!! Thank you so very much! Enjoying watching the snow through those windows this morning! ~Christy
