It's the unnatural super shiny top on this chest. It just had to go. I can't stand super slick cherry pieces and I don't know why I waited till now to change it.
So out came the paints and I got to work. I wanted to add layers of color so I painted the base color of Louis Blue in Annie Sloan chalk paint. Yes, I worked right where the piece sits.
Then a coat of French Linen went on top and I sanded a lot of it back so the blue and the wood tone would show.
Perfect.
After using hemp oil and some dark wax we have shine, but not super glossy and too new looking like before.
Now we have old and worn on the top to match the base.
After finishing the top I couldn't leave the hardware alone. They were an aged brass, but I decided to change them up.
I grabbed my Gilder's Pastes in black and silver and just
used my finger to spread some of each on the handles. This didn't take five minutes to do all of them.
Now the pretties on top look so much better with the glossy brown gone.
So much better in the morning light with the glossy top gone.
It felt good to get a paint brush in my hand again and now there is another piece I want to update soon.
Happy painting!

Looks great Kim, love the colors you used. Such a pretty room, especially with the morning light shining in...
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Cindy
Like the cherry (no more!) on top, your cabinet looks great! I love how you worked right where it sits. :) I agree with Cindy, the light shining in on that space is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteRita
Fabulous finish !
ReplyDeleteThe new "old" top looks great! I really like the hardware change too. I haven't heard of Gilder's paste. Gotta check that out. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteAngie
Stunning!!
ReplyDeleteLooks pretty!!! xo
ReplyDeleteI'm LOVING the new top!!! What a great compliment to the whole look! Perfection!!! You are the best decorator I know!!!
ReplyDeleteMy dear friend, you are too kind!!
DeleteI wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't said anything, but now that you painted it, you are right, it looks much better! Had to laugh that you worked right where it sits, because I do that all the time and my husband thinks I'm crazy!
ReplyDeleteIt really does show your pretties off nicely! Love the new finish!
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful...love the way you finished the hardware too!!
ReplyDeleteNow that turned out fabulous Kim! Great change.
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing! Where do you get Gilders paste?
ReplyDeleteI really like the color combination you used for this piece. Painting the top was a great idea.
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
Of course it did:) I like it much better though!
ReplyDeleteKim,
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Love the painting on the hardware too. This piece is a show stopper. Beautiful.

Really pretty Kim! It looks more like your style now.
ReplyDeleteKim, you are brilliant. Really--you're truly gifted. You notice little things that would simply escape most of us and you have such good instincts! Thank you for sharing your process of creating a beautiful home--we all learn so much from you!
ReplyDeleteRichella, thanks so much for your very kind words. I'm actually just a nut case constantly changing things.
DeleteYou are right, that top does look much better with an aged look! Great little update!
ReplyDeleteI love the change, Kim!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great Kim!
ReplyDeleteHuge improvement! Great thinking, O' Talented One.
ReplyDeletethe lighter color is the perfect compliment to that gorgeous blue, great job!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, Kim! It looks so much more "you"! Beautiful!
ReplyDeletePerfect top now!! I am NOT a fan of shiny wooden pieces either :) Things seem to have so much more character all worn and distressed .
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy seeing your furniture transformations. You make it look so easy . . . and sometimes that's what we need to inspire us to take on a project like this one :0)
ReplyDeleteI love the rich colors in your home. Beautiful, Kim!
Have a great weekend,
Suzanne
Brilliant! Love the new combo with the base color. Can you fly to California and help me paint my pine bedroom set? LOL.....And then we could hit the road to shop!
ReplyDeleteSure thing. On my way!
DeleteWhile it looks OK now, just knowing it is cherry wood underneath breaks my heart. I reserve paint for non real wood pieces like pressboard and cheep veneers. I've had a lifetime love of walnut, mahogany, oak and cherry in all their natural glory. Sorry, just my personal preference.
ReplyDeleteVirginia, this is not a real wood piece. It is cherry veneers and that is why it was super glossy and fake looking. I don't paint real wood in nice shape either. I have no problem painting mass produced pieces like this one sold at the furniture store. This is not an antique.
DeleteYou'd never know from the picture. I'll have to learn your technique for the grandkids playroom. Thanks. (By the way your home is beautiful, I love your vignette postings)
DeleteTotally agree about the shiny cherry surfaces...love the update! I'm pinning!

House on the Way
It looks great - what a beautiful piece of furniture! So much better without the super shine!
ReplyDeleteSally @cottagefix
I was looking hard at the "before" photo and couldn't see anything "wrong" but I love to see how you achieved that great layered-paint look on the top....I am pinning for future reference!
ReplyDeleteSo much better - it looks like it was always meant to look like that - gorgeous !
ReplyDeleteI work with pieces in place too :)
Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI agree that looks so much better! I like how you also aged the hardware. That was a great idea.
ReplyDeleteLove this piece and the finish you created.. Enjoy! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteLove it! You have become such an expert at refinishing things and taking things to fabulousness!
ReplyDeleteGreat touch!

Looks fab Kim!
ReplyDeleteWow! Amazing how just a little change can make such a big difference! Love this piece! Beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful Kim and now the top really seems to match the rest of the piece! Perfect as always! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou have an amazing eye for seeing things that most of us wouldn't notice. I love the new top, the colors you chose are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLooks so pretty Kim! Could you tell me, did you sand down the top first or just paint it?
ReplyDeleteNicki, I used a liquid deglosser on the finish, but no sanding before painting. That is the beauty of the chalk paint. It's so easy and fast.
DeleteLooks beautiful, Kim. Love your color choice.
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me the color combination you used on the main body of the piece? Looks great!
ReplyDeleteTerri, I should have included that link, but didn't think about it. If you will look on my sidebar under project gallery you will see a tab for Aubusson Sideboard and that is the original post.
DeleteThat is beautiful. I love the sideboard and the colors you chose.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a beautiful piece! Yep, I love the new lighter top and silver hardware!
ReplyDeleteYou make everything seem so easy peasy, Kim! Your entire home is a showpiece of your talent! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeletePoppy
It's amazing what a HUGE CHANGE just a little "finesse" with a fine eye will do for a room. I liked it before...I LOVE it now!
