Last Sunday my daughter and granddaughter came over to make Christmas cookies. I had started making some before they arrived in the afternoon or we would have been making, baking and decorating until midnight.
I set up my laptop with the recipes on it that I had pinned and pulled out this big boy which by the way is hardly ever used. You see I am NOT a baker!
When I start baking I have good intentions for everything to run smoothly and to have wonderful treats in the end, but for some reason something will ALWAYS go wrong. I just wasn't born to bake.
The first batch I made were chewy ginger cookies and that recipe went well and they came out good. That is a miracle.
Golden and chewy and covered in sugar just like the recipe called for.
Then moving on to the sugar cookies I thought I would mix up the dough before my crew got here since the dough has to chill for an hour. Some recipes call for much longer, but this one said one hour.
I mixed up the five cups of flour, four eggs, sugar, vanilla, baking powder.....WAIT!
BAKING POWDER? Oh no, I added BAKING SODA!! See I told y'all I'm not a baker!
Throw that out and start over.....yes, start over.
I'm telling you this is normal for me to make a mistake.
Don't you love Leila in my apron and standing on my chippy stool?
You have to make a mess when baking and we won't even show the floor.
I don't have the best Christmas cookie cutter shapes, but I think the blue iced cookie is supposed to be a reindeer, but it looks like a cow to me. :)
I had a third cookie recipe to make, but it took hours just to make these so maybe another day.... or maybe not.
After all I was not born to bake.
Oh, my word it's almost Christmas!
My son and family are on their way from Tennessee driving in the rain and I can't wait to see the other grands. Wish they lived closer so they could all help make the cookies.
Still plenty of time to join Wow Us Wednesdays in the post before this one.

Good job Kim and family!
ReplyDeleteI am not the best baker! Cut out cookies...not sure what my problem is. Ha! Baking is a science, and in I did not make the best grades in Chem class. Ha! Physics good. Chem, not so good. My daughter is a master at baking...which she did not get from me.ha! Merry Christmas to you and your bunch! Sheila
ReplyDeleteFrom my heart and home to yours Kim Merry Christmas. Girl I simply can't believe your are a grandma-you are just too young looking!!! Can you see my green showing?! Just kidding. Since I'm gluten free I don't do much baking anymore either-otherwise I would look like Mrs. Claus. May you have joy, laughter and love with your family on Christmas.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Noreen
I can so relate. I started baking sugar cookies with my daughter at Christmas time when she was young. She's 25 now and the last few years has committed to bringing Christmas cookies to her office pot luck. Of course, she comes over late on a Sunday to make them in my kitchen. I get the dough made and chilled ahead of time. She insists on cut out shapes and making royal icing. It wears me out! But, I'm so glad she wants to still bake cookies with me. I would never tell her no.
ReplyDeleteLeila is so cute! I love to bake - when I have plenty of time. I made thumbprint cookies and candycane (flavor not shape) cookies today. Still want to do a pan of frosted brownies. I'm in TN too and have just had mostly misting today, but storms are possible through the night. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
ReplyDeleteI love to bake Kim but it is so much more fun with special helpers. Glad your daughter and granddaughter had fun helping. Enjoy your family and the good times that will be shared on Christmas. Merry Christmas.

I was not born to bake either. Maybe nEXT year Colleen will want to do that with me. I made NO cookies this year:) Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteMy hairdresser (whom I've gone to for years) confessed to me just last week that she can't bake, especially cookies. I told her about the Pillsbury Chocolate Peppermint cookie mix that taste like homemade cookies. I'll find out next month if she tried it or not and how they turned out. PS: I'm a former home economics teacher, so that might explain why I love baking. Love your granddaughter, Kim!
ReplyDeleteKim, I didn't really do a lot of baking until my Mother passed away. So, I had to get with the program, Practice makes perfect, well almost! Your Leila is a doll! Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteIt's not the cookies that are important but the memories your granddaughter will have forever. Enjoy your family Christmas!
ReplyDeleteHaha! I am not a baker either! Maybe it's in the name! ;) Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteSuch fun to bake with grand and your daughter. They look wonderful. Merry Christmas
ReplyDeleteShe's adorable in her apron Kim! Baking is messy and it's not Christmas without sugar cookies, no matter what the shapes look like :)
ReplyDeleteWell...the cookies look great and it's all about making the memories and not so much the cookies!!!....Loved the pics!!!
ReplyDeleteKinda looks like a cow to me too. I can't believe Leila is so big! She's beautiful. I used to bake bread and all kinds of sweets when my girls were young, but seems as I've gotten older, I've forgotten how.

Fun making memories. Hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

I'm with you on the baking! Looks like you all had a great time, though, and that is the important part. And the cookies look great! My mom is a baker and I think it really just takes a lot of practice.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful daughter and granddaughter Kim! You and your daughter must have been young moms!! Have a very happy Christmas with your family. We are sleepless in Seattle - our boys are too excited to sleep... so, in a way, I'm ready for Christmas to be here! :) ~julie
ReplyDeleteI've always loved to bake. I think you either love it or hate it. Your cookies look great and it looks like your granddaughter had fun. :)
ReplyDeleteKim I have done that soda / powder mixup in the past as well ! :) Lovely shots of the baking and the important thing is Leila having fun and you making memories for her. I had to laugh because I was doing the same thing yesterday with four grandkids and their mama ...making gingerbread cookies and oh my the mess! :)
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful family pictures. Building memories is so worth all the mess! Have a very Merry and blessed Christmas my friend!

It's the memories your making. And the love that's baking. Prep is the key. And when it's all over and clean up is happening that's when you know it was a sucess. I pray everyone arrives safe.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas
Wow, I remember when your granddaughter was born and now she is making cookies. Where does the time go? Merry Christmas.
ReplyDeleteGood job! I never actually got around to baking any cookies but managed a batch of fudge! Love making memories with grandchildren!
ReplyDeleteI used to make sugar cookies with my boys every Christmas Eve morning..... They loved it and when they came home from college for Christmas, the tradition continued.... Now after marriages and girlfriends, it does not happen. Maybe when the grands come along we can start again!!! Love Leila in your apron!!
