Last weekend while it was nasty out I decided to tone down the color on the kitchen bar stools. Might as well do something productive since I was stuck inside....right?
Remember these mismatched farmhouse style stools?
I painted them gray on the bottom with charcoal seats. Painting bar stools is about as bad as painting chairs because of all the rungs. Not fun, but needed to be done.
These are stools I have picked up here and there for very little money so painting them to change them up is an easy change, but just time consuming.
So after painting three stools with two coats of paint and then using wax on the seats and hemp oil on the legs I realized I hate the color of them against the cabinets and floor. Especially when the sun came in late in the afternoon the cabinets have a yellow tone plus the floor and these were just all wrong.
Normally I am very good at choosing paint colors, but not this time. The cabinet color in these shots does not look as yellowy green as it does in person. The paint colors I chose are just too blue. You can see how blue this one looks.
So what to do? Well, I tell you the rest of the story in part two. Do you think I painted them again?
In other news if you follow me on facebook then some of you know, and thank y'all for the well wishes, that Miss Bailey had surgery yesterday on her knee for a luxating patella. The vet said she did very well. She stays till Friday afternoon and then the fun begins. For two months I have to keep her from jumping, running and no steps. It will be easy at first as she will be all bandaged up, but when her leg is better he said I will have to show tough love. That's for sure because she loves to jump up on the furniture.
Sorry Bailey, no sleeping on the stairs for awhile.

Poor baby! I bet she'll be so happy to be home on Friday. Have you ever tried Krylon's chalk paint that comes in a spray can? Not quite the same as the painted on kind, but I would do just about anything to avoid painting spindles :)
ReplyDeletePam, no I haven't tried that yet. I need to some time. Thanks
DeleteI really liked all the original pop of color with the stools, but I can understand you changing the color as well. I know I'll like whatever color you choose just because you have a way of bringing something together and making it look totally awesome! Because I'm a matching freak though, I probably would've painted them with a cream colored bottom, and then possibly stain the top...pull those colors out of that beautiful counter top:) Have a great day, Kim!
ReplyDeleteCindy, the red is being weaned out and I'm toning things down so I can use any color accessories in the future. Thanks
DeleteBless her heart...
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda. I'm sure she will be spoiled when she gets home.
DeletePoor baby! I am guessing you repainted those stools! Hope your little friend heals nicely.
ReplyDeleteThanks Suzanne. Wait and see.
DeleteI hope Miss Bailey is home and feeling much better tomorrow. As for the stools, I am guessing you repainted them.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pinky.
DeletePraying that Miss Bailey heals up nicely. My guess is you painted the stools again but I could be wrong. Maybe you waxed them?
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandy.
DeletePoor baby girl..... and I think you absolutely repainted the stools... it would drive you cra-cra not to!!!! lolol
ReplyDeleteHa ha, Lisa and thanks.
DeletePoor little Bailey. Our bichon Zuzu had a hip operation and we had to keep him from jumping also {tough job}, we put a sign on the front door do not ring bell{pet had surgery} and if anyone was coming over they called us so there were no surprises at the front door!Good luck with Miss Bailey and the chairs!!!!
ReplyDeleteKathy, great idea about putting a note out about the doorbell. She usually knows before they even ring it that someone is here, but every little bit will help to keep her from suddenly moving too quickly. Thanks for the idea.
DeleteSometimes I just keep telling myself the color is right when deep down I know it's wrong, but after painting 3 stools I would probably toss them rather than do it all over! Good luck with sweet Miss Bailey!
ReplyDeleteJenna
Jenna, you and I think alike!
DeleteHi Kim! I haven't visited your blog in a while, been busy with life and haven't done a lot of blog hopping to read... but your place looks LOVELY, so many changes and I love the look. Had to tell you, for the first time ever I used chalk paint, remembering all you have accomplished with it.. and I LOVE IT! WOW. I used Amitha Verma brand, fantastic stuff. Will do a blog post on it in the coming week to show the results (antique rocking horse repaint job). Hope all is well! Your blog looks fantastic.. as do you!
ReplyDeleteHi Karen, have not heard of that brand. There are so many new ones. I want one of those old rocking horse so badly and they are so expensive. Thanks
DeleteKim, I bet the new stool color you chose was duller than you are. I know it sounds strange, but when we chose color that just isn't "us," we just can't seem to gravitate to it. I love that rusty red you have on the original middle stool--it matches the rusty red in your family room beyond. Hope Miss Bailey is heeding her command to rest and heal. Sharon
ReplyDeleteSharon, the red is leaving and that is why I was trying to tone down the stools. All is fixed now and will be revealed tomorrow. Thanks
DeleteI'm sure Miss Bailey is homesick already! OK, my guess: you kept the seats charcoal, but either distressed the legs or repainted them? I'm sure this was done in record time - can't imagine you getting any sleep till those stools looked perfect! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks Betty. Yes the wrong color was driving me nuts.
DeletePoor Bailey!
ReplyDeleteOur lab, Belle, had a torn ACL and had to have surgery (an accident from playing another) and had to be confined for 2 months...no easy task as she was 2 at the time.
We used a "corral" at the time, she had to be on a leash to go out and then back.
I wish you lots of luck and patience...it's a long road.
Unfortunately for Belle, she had two more knee surgeries...another on the same knee (meniscus tore) and another on the opposite knee.
Yes, keep her from jumping....

Nancy, Bailey has to be leashed to to go out and will probably be in her large crate most of the time with breaks to walk her around and to let her eat and potty. This is not going to be fun.
DeleteOh poor Miss Bailey! I am sure you will spoil her when she comes home. Maybe you should get a little ramp for her to get up on things. My friend did that for her dog. Of course it won't exactly go with your pretty furniture, but our doggies are worth it! Looking forward to seeing what you ended up doing to the stools. In the end, I am sure they will end up beautiful!
ReplyDeleteShelley
OH, yes, she will be spoiled. I can't wait to get her home. Thanks
DeleteI too have made many such mistakes but all will be well in the end and you'll get it figured out. I also loved the different colors and wonder if you sand off the bluish gray to let the color come through again if that might do the trick?? I love that you keep feathering your nest!
ReplyDeleteI painted them to get rid of all that color. Getting older and taste is a changing again. Thanks!
DeleteI know you can't wait to get Bailey back home, but repainting the stools probably kept yourself busy as you were missing her! I wonder how much you can keep her crated to prevent movement?
ReplyDeleteJane, I can't wait to see her again and love on her. She is really good in her crate so I don't think it will be a problem until she gets much better and wants to be back to herself, but has to keep it easy for two months. She will not understand that.
DeleteOh gee. Poor Bailey. As for paint mistakes...I have done that too. No fun painting all of those rungs for sure. I know you will have a great solution! Sheila
ReplyDeleteNo fun for sure, Sheila. Thanks
DeleteGlad to hear Bailey is doing good. Looking forward to seeing if you going to keep the stools same or
ReplyDeleteWhat your going to do to them????
Have a great day.
Thanks Pamela. Reveal tomorrow.
DeleteGlad to hear Bailey did well through her surgery. Looking forward to seeing what you did with the stools you were not happy with.
ReplyDeleteThanks Penny.
DeleteI like the stools in a lighter color, but I agree they need to warm up in tone to match what's going on around them. I'm guessing you either did re-paint or used an antiquing technique to throw the tone over to the warmer side you were looking for. Unless you were in the shopping mood... ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Lory. Wait and see. :)
DeleteHope Miss Bailey has a safe recovery. My little 3.5 lb furbaby also has a luxating patella, which the vet said is steadily worsening (it stays popped out more than it goes back in). I am terrified at the thought of my baby having this operation, but I also don't want her to be in pain from not having it.
ReplyDeleteYou have a tiny baby. My girl weighs 15 pounds. Thanks
DeleteI'll bet you used a glaze or darker wax! Because you're smart like that!
ReplyDeleteWait and see...
DeleteThe original color had your southern fun style in using color... As for the stools and to blue of a grey for your yellow undertones in The cabinet work I see that as well, and these kind of things bother me as well. Perhaps you used some of the cabinet paint and washed over them, or threw I. The so to speak towl and replaced them with something else? We all know how you are about moving about chairs in your home, perhaps you found new bar stools or eliminated them all together stacking benches and pieces in place of the stool use. I am sure what ever you did to correct the issue it looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteI often live with something for years and tire of a finish and think something new would give it a lift to only then paint it back after disappointment with the tone or feeling it gives to the room.
I now am wondering what you did to make all this stool stuff right?
Well I will see soon enough :))
As for your miss Bailey sure hope she is up and about real soon.
I have to tell you Kim my daughters middle name is Bailey, :))
Xx
Dore
Thanks Dore. Yes, you will see what I did soon. How cool your daughter's middle name is Bailey. Love it!
DeleteBailey is adorable...so sweet!
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteI will be much tougher on you than Miss Bailey! Hang in there Mom! Tough Love it is. Hope all goes well for your little sweetie girl!
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteHope Bailey does well from her surgery. Won't be easy keeping her from jumping for sure.
ReplyDeleteI understand about paint projects gone wrong. It happens to all of us! To be honest though, I thought the mismatched counters stools were super cute before you painted them. :)
Tracey, I liked them, too, but I am weeding the red out and toning things down with the new sofa coming soon in the adjoining room. With the open concept colors have to flow.
DeletePoor Bailey! I hope that she is feeling better soon. You are going to have quite a task, my Munchen had a broken leg and she could not walk except to go out, or jump, or run for 6 weeks. That was a long 6 weeks because as she started feeling better all she wanted to do was go out to "relieve herself." Smart little girl that one.
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to see the finished bar stool, I am sure they look great!
Yes, Elizabeth it is going to be a long 6 to 8 weeks. Thanks
DeleteHi Kim! I hope Bailey is doing better each day and she is home tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteAbout the stools, What a bummer! I know painting all those legs is a pain in the rear end!
I am pretty sure you already repainted them and they look fabulous!!
Yes, a pain in the rear for sure. Thanks
DeleteI am so sorry that the stools did not work out after all the hard work that you did in painting them...but I know the resolution is a good one and mum is the word!! :) So glad that Bailey's surgery went well and she will be in good hands when recuperating....I told Bailey to milk it for all it's worth!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, mum is the word!
DeleteSad the stools didn't work out, It is hard work to paint all those small legs and detail. I think you probably got some new ones. Just guessing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marty. You are a smart lady.
DeleteI can't believe that "you" could ever have a project gone wrong! However, I'm sure they're already repainted! And, poor Bailey ... I hope she heals quickly!
ReplyDeleteHa ha Becca and thanks!
DeleteYea...no on grey/ blue . ..I'm guessing more saddle,like Mr.Savvy chair ?
ReplyDeleteInteresting how our decor tastes change...well for some aways . ..I have friends who haven't changed a pillow in 40 years ! Not! I it's an ongoing process! Just go great stool for kitchen at P.one...on sale!
Kisses to Miss B.
I've been wondering about Miss Bailey. I know it's going to be tough. I just did it!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
So glad Miss Bailey's surgery went well!! The pic is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteMy little Darla had to have both legs done for the same reason...I guess common to Yorkies. She lived a long beautiful life, but every once in a while, her leg would "pop out", but she always managed to get it back in it's place. Bailey will be sleeping on the stairs again in no time. Best wishes on a redo of your stools.
ReplyDeletePoor Bailey! I hope she will heal quickly. Can't wait to see what you do with the stools.
ReplyDeleteI hope Miss Bailey will be a good girl and listen to you... I love the painted bar stool, but I know colours can be deceiving on pictures and maybe they don't look good at all with the other colours in reality. I've been trying to take a good pictures of my newly painted chairs for day and none reflect the real colour...
