Who likes big clocks? I mean a really big clock. Who likes old big clocks? Yea, me, too so I decided since I haven't found a big old clock I could afford that I would just transform the big clock I have.
I gathered my paints that I had on hand and then even bought a new color while I was buying paint for one of the guest rooms. Yes, I painted an armoire on Thursday, this clock on Friday and a guest room on Saturday. If you follow me on instagram (and you know you should) then you would have seen these things that I was working on.
This is what the clock looked like. I bought it at Pier One last November. It's been hanging here in the dining room and Mr. Savvy has not ever noticed it until he saw me working on it and asked where it came from. I told him it's been here since before Thanksgiving. Silly unobservant man.
This paint job consist of many layers of paint doing one layer at a time and then I painted the numbers black and then I toned them down with more paint and used my fingers to wipe some of it back off. There was also oil mixed with dark wax used and then some more dark wax added.
I took the hands off since it wasn't working anyway and most old clocks have lost their hands.
I really didn't intend for it to turn out this color, but I kind of like the fact that it looks like copper that has aged to that green patina over time and the numbers look a bit like zinc.
I seriously started painting this and could not stop. I just kept standing back and looking at it and then would do some more to it. Oh, and yes, I painted it while it hung on the wall.
This took some time, but sure saved me a lot of money by making a new clock look old.
So if you can't find an authentic old item you are wanting maybe you can make a new piece look like the real thing.

That looks great! Love the patina on it. I laughed when you said you painted right on the wall. You paint like I do! I use a paper plate in one hand to protect the floor or the wall and my right hand to paint. Way too much trouble to actually take it down. lol
ReplyDeleteThanks Christine. Yes easier to just paint it where it is.
DeleteWow! It's gorgeous, Kim. And I had to laugh that you were painting it while it hung on the wall. I am the same way when I paint!
ReplyDeleteThanks Suzanne!
DeleteI LOOOOVE it! It looks amazing!!! It really does look like aged copper! Fabulous job! Well worth the effort.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pinky!
DeleteOh I love it!!!....you made it look antique! Great idea!!! ... and of course you painted it with it still hanging on the wall....you are the painting guru!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Shirley!

DeleteLove it!! Your Mr. Savvy reminds me of my husband. Will suddenly ask "is that new" and I respond it's been there 2 years.....
ReplyDeleteYes...they look but they don't see. Funny. I want your energy! Sheila
ReplyDeleteSo true Sheila.
DeleteHi Kim. How is Miss Bailey doing?
ReplyDeleteShe's good Karen. Thanks
DeleteLove how this turned out, but you're far more skillful than I to be able to paint it while it's on the wall!!! You go, girl!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rusha!
DeletePoor Mr. Savvy! LOL Good job on the painting. We have verdigris outdoor lights and I have a big copper boiler that is used for plants - it's that beautiful patina. I'm not into clocks, we don't have a single wall clock in our house. I do have a couple of old mantel/desk/alarm clocks.
ReplyDeleteYes poor mr. Savvy!
DeleteNow I understand your secret...hehehe. Your good, Kim:)
ReplyDeleteNOTE TO SELF: (You know I'm laughing over here)
The more that we change things up around the house, the easier it is to disguise what we buy...I mean how can one possibly keep up with everything if were shuffling our goodies from room to room:D
While the clock may have hung on the wall for year, his eyes are to focused on all the other stuff that moves from room to room! PURE GENIUS:D
OK, I'm ready for SAVVY TIPS 102! Your the greatest;)
You are so funny Cindy and thanks
