When I shared the new look in the great room I told y'all that there was a change in there, but I wanted to show you the way the room had looked for a couple weeks before I shared the next new look. While my sister and I were antiquing I was on the lookout for a nice size French style mirror to go over the fireplace. Well, this isn't exactly the style I had in mind, but the details were just too gorgeous to ignore and the price was good.
I gave you this peek the other day. Just look at those details. This mirror is old, too and quite heavy.
And there are the cute flowers on the corners.
But what really grabbed me is the top of it. That tiny scalloped edge and then the hand carved flowers and look at the detail of the leaves. It looks like ivory or bone and I'm not real sure what it really is.
Isn't that cool? Nothing on this mirror is painted. The wood was very raw and a bit dry so I used some Hemp Oil on it to add some moisture to the wood and it just made it richer.
The mirror is very tall and slim and it needed something else on each side of it after we placed it on the mantel. Even Mr. Savvy was putting in his two cents which is unusual. I think because we were used to the horizontal painting that the mirror just looked lost.
So I thought for a minute and grabbed these vintage Ethan Allen brass sconces from the dining room and it was just what this wall needed. Of course that left me with no sconces on each side of the hutch in the dining room. Don't worry I was able to fill those spots nicely and I will share soon.
So where did the painting go?
Oh, it moved to the perfect spot.
Enjoy a fabulous weekend and wow, it's April already!!

DeleteNice mirror! I love wood...so this works for me. And the vertical aspect works so well with the height of your fireplace wall/breast. And the sconces...so French. C'est une bonne ideé.
ReplyDeleteBon week-end!

Awe thanks Sheila!
DeleteBeautiful Mirror!!! The mantel is classically decorated!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThe new mirror looks great there. I remember when we changed to a taller/narrower mirror above our fireplace - I couldn't quit looking at it (and wondering why I didn't do it sooner!). With our cathedral ceilings, taller really does look better. That mirror is a great find!
ReplyDeletePS - I think we may do some antiquing later today. Taxes first. Blah!
Thanks Tina!

DeleteGOR-GEEEE-US! What a beautiful mirror! I think the wheat-like sconces look great next to it. And, the sconces tie in nicely with the yellow confit jars on the adjacent bookshelf. The room looks fantastic.

DeleteI think the style of your mirror is called Eastlake. From around 1880 in the late Victorian era.
