When I recently shared the new vintage mirror over the mantel the only added decor was the brass sconces. When I tried to add anything else it just looked like too much stuff to me. Over time it started looking to bare to me so I tried to figure out how to get the right balance.
This is how it looked before.
What I had to do was to raise the sconces up higher so I could place just a few things on the mantel.
I grabbed my iron lattice urns, old books and preserved boxwood balls and played around until I created this look.
On one side I used three books and on the other only two since the books are all a bit different in size and I wanted the two sides a bit different yet the same.
All these items add some texture to the mantel without looking too busy.
Maybe you didn't notice, but there are some more changes in here, what can I say, and I will share those soon.
Have a fabulous week!

Kim, that is exactly what your mantel needed...perfect! Still love the mirror! Happy Monday! Pam @ Everyday Living
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice change--neither bare nor cluttered.
ReplyDeleteI really like the medici in the fireplace. I am so going to copy that. But if I had some good medicis, they would be in my garden first, then in my rental. Still hunting.
Love the additions...and I spy a new rug!!
ReplyDeletePerfect as always.
ReplyDeleteCan I just say, I L-O-V-E it when you change something! Your the best, Kim:D It looks beautiful! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteWell I hesitate to voice my opinion - and it is just that - MY opinion. (And who am I? Certainly not a designer!) BUT, I am not one to use so much of the same on each side. Of course the two sconces would be the same. But - for me - it's too much of the sameness. I'm not saying it looks bad though! It would be pretty boring if we all liked the same thing. I do see you've changed pillows :).
ReplyDeleteTina, some people like symmetry and some don't. I guess I do. To some people if it isn't the same on both sides it is off to them. You not liking it the same on both sides throws it off to you.
DeleteThat makes sense!
DeleteLove the look!
ReplyDeleteThe new look on mantel looks great, your previous mantel was good, but I agree with you by adding just a little extra it makes it look more interesting..
ReplyDeleteBe Blessed
I think it looks great!
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at this post.... because I always start with the mantle, and get it to where I think I want it.... then I begin the tweeking.. it usually takes me about a week to get it to where I want it.... I too like, no love symmetry... when I go into someone's home where things are assymetrical it drives me crazy... I just want to edit it lol my OCD taking control... love the new mantle...
ReplyDeleteAnd you nailed it for sure. Love the simple classic look of it all!
ReplyDeleteLove your sconces. Can you tell me where you lucked up on them!! Absolutely love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteThey are vintage Ethan Allen and I found them in an antique mall a few years ago. Thanks so much for the compliment!!
DeleteI like the changes Kim! It's just enough without being too busy, though I didn't mind the "bare" before either! But I love symmetry so this just speaks to me.

Much better...I felt your sconces were too low, but hesitated to say so, since you seemed touchy about people saying they liked your red accents better than your neutral look. I am never sure about responding to bloggers' posts. You put it out there, but do you really want feedback ? I would never want to hurt anyone's feelings with my comments, nor would I intentionally be rude, but I would like honest exchanges. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteYes, they were a bit low. Hubby hung them and liked them, but I knew they needed to be raised. I finally did it when he was at work. I have not been touchy about anyone saying anything about the red. I know some folks like the red better and that's fine. I just don't like it anymore so it was time to move away from it. I appreciate input that's why we blog and share.
DeleteGood to know...I am still learning the etiquette in blog land.
DeleteWell, you nailed it! I love the feel that just a few old books give the mantel.
ReplyDeleteI love the additions. I also thnk you have a new rug!
ReplyDeleteLove your sconces. I bought some battery powered tapered candles to put in mine and just love being able to enjoy the flickering light in the evening.
