A room is just walls, floor, ceiling, windows and doors. It's the details that make it more than just a room and makes the room say this is my style and my home.
It's mixing new and old. Adding antiques to a room adds soul.
Artwork adds warmth and personality. I created this gallery wall several years ago. I have always loved hunt scenes so I gathered these from different antique shops.
See how I revamped the gallery wall.
Choose artwork that speaks to you and shows your personality. This old dog painting was found at an antique mall years ago and I still love it. I love that it isn't perfect.
A rug adds softness and makes a room quieter by absorbing sound. I found this one years ago on Overstock.
Collections like old books and ironstone work with the French county style I love and collections are great details that show your personality.
Pillows add texture and color and it's so easy to change them out occasionally especially seasonally.
Use chairs that fit the style of the home like this reproduction French style chair that's perfect in this room or I could move it to another room and it would fit in just fine.
I was thrilled when I found this newly reupholstered chair in the perfect houndstooth at the Country Living Fair. It compliments the room much better than what I had here before. The monogrammed pillow is that extra detail that finishes the look.
I switched out the boot forms that were sitting here for years with this finial....just because.
Lighting like sconces and lamps add ambiance plus offer task lighting. I avoid using overhead lighting as much as possible.
I love unique lamps like this dog lamp found at an antique mall.
I hope I have inspired you with some of the things I call the details that make a room.
Wishing y'all a fabulous week!
Thank you, Kim. You have given us some great ideas.

DeleteLovely...lovely room! So many things to check out. I love rooms that make people want to walk around and look! I had my co-workers over for lunch one day. Several days later, my boss ask me about books he noticed in my collection and mentioned authors his wife like to read. I thought that was sweet that he really noticed things. This room makes me want to "prowl"! Thanks for sharing.

DeleteYou sound like you are giving us a design lesson LOL. Yes, the details make the room. My main goal is to let my husband and mine's personalities show in our home, filling out home with things that we love and have meaning to us. We are fortunate to have some family items handed down and I love using those in our home. Decorating a home is such a personal thing. What works for one may not for another.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am giving a design lesson and hope to inspire others who have trouble decorating. Yes, decorating is a personal thing and that's why people should add what they love to collect and the colors and textures and style they love to make it their home.
