Even with the slight bay window on this side by the time anyone pulls this chair out to sit in it there would be no room to walk behind it. I sure don't want to have to get up every time a guest needs to get by. Sooooooo.......
I found two new chairs on Houzz. I've had a lot of luck shopping on Houzz and this is not a sponsored post. Just sharing what has worked for me. The the chippy sofa table is from houzz, too.
I still wanted the host chairs to be different from the side chairs so I went with the darker color and a tight caned back. These chairs are made by the same company that the large host chairs are made by so I knew I would love the nubby fabric on them since it is the same.
From a distance the chairs look black, but the color is a dark stain called java.
Love the welting and tacks. I didn't order arm chairs because they never seem to fit under the table well.
After adding the new chairs I made a slight change on the table by replacing the large urn with a French ironstone tureen.
You can read my post on drying hydrangeas here.
Now, this room will be ready for entertaining without difficulty getting around.
Oh, and Miss Bailey approves. I just wish she would sit still long enough to get a clear shot. 😉
Beautiful chairs! I always wondered if I would like 2 different colors on my dining room chairs? I know I could not do that in my house, even though I see the relation to the hutch with the dark stain. I am not a matchy-matchy type usually...but I need all the same style/color chair. I like your other chairs best but I see the problem with the size of them in relation to the space given. You have a good eye and it is a pretty space!
ReplyDeleteYes, I need function over looks. Thanks
DeleteBetter! Love that the color of the stain in the new chairs coordinate so well with the antique French hutch....really grounds the area. Great thing to know about Houzz. Beautiful space!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Shirley.
DeleteThey look wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Penny.
DeleteThis is a smart move. When we are invited to one friend's house, the table has an old church bench that seats four. The two in the middle are stuck there the entire evening or else have to ask their neighbor to get up so they can get out.
ReplyDeleteIt will be so much easier to serve and to clear dishes with the smaller chairs.
Having the end chairs slightly different seems to be quite common here. We have two that are the same as the other chairs but have arms and a solid fabric instead of stripes--they all work together but aren't exactly the same.
Now where have you moved the armchairs???
Yes, no fun being trapped and having to ask others to let you out. I will show you where they are soon.
DeleteI hear ya Kim. Our dining room in our old house was so tiny we had to actually angle the table when we had larger parties for dinner! I love the look of different chairs at the head of the table. These definitely tie in well with your gorgeous hutch.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lauren.
DeleteI love them, Kim! I have been thinking about changing the chairs in my matched-set cherry dining room so I love seeing what you use in here - especially since your china cabinet is dark like mine. Very pretty!
ReplyDeleteShelley
Thanks Shelley.
DeleteThe new chairs are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThank you Marty. I love your animal hyde chairs.
DeleteBummer! I liked the upholstered chairs. I think an upholstered/slip-covered (armless) head chair would look great in your room. I like the darker color of the new chairs with your china cabinet. The new chairs look a bit smaller than the side chairs - or is that just the angle of picture?
ReplyDeleteYes, they are a tiny bit shorter. I have had armless slipcovered parsons chairs years ago. I don't want that look now. These are much easier to pull in and out since they are lightweight.
DeleteSo pretty!! Love that centerpiece!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Carol.
DeleteBEAUTIFUL! LOVE THEM!
ReplyDeleteThank you Veronica.
DeleteI think they coordinate well. Nothing is more frustrating in a dining room than not being able to move around comfortably. Wise choice. Miss Bailey would be a knockout sales model!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sherry. Yes, she is rather good about staying put while I snap a shot if she could just learn to freeze, too. :)
DeleteI like the big chairs, but I love your solution.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol. Yes I wish the others had fit in the space.
DeleteIsn't. practicality just the pits?!! The new chairs look lovely
ReplyDeleteYes, it is. :)
DeleteKim, I love the new chairs! I hate my arm chairs because they don't slide well underneath the table! If your dining room was only for looks, the others worked, but since you need it to function, you made a good choice!
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam. Yes function wins.
DeleteAnd where did the hostess chairs go?
ReplyDeleteWill share soon.
DeleteYes, that will be better. It looks like you still don't have much space behind the chair at the end where the wall is. You have more at the bay window end. Can you push the table a little toward the window--not much, but enough to give a smidgen more room behind the chair at the other end? I don't know if you have weighty people in your family but the way it is now they might get stuck next to the wall! I like the new chairs with the hutch. Nice choice.
ReplyDeleteThe chair is pulled out further than it will be when someone actually uses it and there is plenty of room. Thanks.
DeleteLove the new chairs....removing the others seem to let a breath of fresh air to the room. Don't get me wrong the former chairs are also very nice but these seem to work better. Wonderful choice. I had the same problem in my dining room as well the squeezing by just does not work. Lisa@ Sweet Tea N' Salty Air
ReplyDeleteLove the new chairs! You do have more room now. And so glad Miss Bailey seems to be doing well. She's so sweet!
ReplyDeleteOh, I can relate to this problem! The new chairs look great - glad they resolved your seating issue. Now you've got me thinking about replacing the two end chairs at my table!
ReplyDeleteYour new end chairs are great. I see Bailey approves too. You have the best luck at Houzz with your finds. They should sponsor you!!!! I want the sofa table you purchased but it has been out of stock so I hope they will bring it back. They do have some wonderful finds on there. Have a great Friday and wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteKris
What a beautiful room! I agree the smaller chairs are more practical. I loved the bigger ones, though!
ReplyDeleteEverything looks lovely and you definitely made the correct decision regarding your chairs. I am so fond of your candle sconces, chandelier and the tureen - all gorgeous !
ReplyDeleteMiss Bayley is right, those chairs are perfect for your dining-room and they are beautiful too! The comfy chairs are gorgeous, but maybe they were not right for the room.
ReplyDeleteJust found your beautiful blog and I adore your style! I too have a musical chairs home and am always itching to change things up. Could you please tell me where you found the large tufted chairs you previously had at the end of the dining table. I NEED them :)
ReplyDeleteI bought those from Wayfair a couple years ago. It doesn't look like they are available there now. They are by Orient Express. You may find them somewhere else or maybe Wayfair will get them again. Houzz.com may have them.
