The Perfect Antique Shop Find

6.28.2019

On Monday I shared my summer master bedroom and mentioned that I would like to possibly replace the large cow canvas with something else. Then after finishing that post I went antique shopping, as I so needed a break from painting (if you follow me on instagram then you know what I was painting) and I shared pictures from that shopping excursion here. I wasn't really expecting to find anything for that wall, but just wanted to get out.
Well, that visit to the anitque store was meant to be and today I'm revealing the perfect antique shop find.

I was actually getting ready to leave the store and walked by a booth and there it was hanging high on the wall. I stopped and looked closer and thought maybe that would work. I really liked the picture and the frame and then I checked the price and it was fabulous so it had to come home with me.

It's called Stratford-On-Avon. and in teeny tiny print under that it says The Birth Place of Shakespeare. All I know is it has cows drinking out of a stream and a steeple in the background. I only purchase art that really speaks to me. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this.

So the cow painting moved out and look how perfect this painting fits the space. This is not so bold and in your face and goes better with the calmness of the room. Excuse all the glare. I had to shut the shutters to get a better shot.

Inforamtion about the artist:

James Fairman (1826-1904) born in Glasgow, Scotland and came to New York with his widowed mother when he was six years old.
He was known for city scene, landscape, marine, and figure-genre painting.

The painting I bought sells for $80 to $150 and I got mine for $55.

A few people on instagram said they either had this same picture or someone else had one.

Well, I can't believe it's the weekend again.

Have a good one and keep cool!

  2. To be more precise, it's a safe assumption that you actually purchased a very nice photo-lithographic print reproduction (on paper) of an original painting by Mr. Fairman. Not an uncommon practice for art publishers to reproduce large quantities of popular works from the 19th century this way. and there's nothing wrong with that - it's a lovely print and you got it at a very reasonable price considering its size and cost of custom framing these days! I've done the same thing when I see works that appeal to me at a ridiculously low cost. Enjoy it!

    1. Yes, I know it is a reproduction. Most of my framed pictures are. His oils are hundreds of dollars.

  3. I've seen this print several times also. You got a great deal - framing would have cost more than that! It's too bad the original owner didn't use glare free glass (or whatever it's called). I learned the hard way to do that (LOL). Have a good weekend! It's gonna be a good one to be on/in the water!!

    1. Apparently these were produced with this same frame and matting. I had two others say they have the same exact thing and when I googled the artist's info they also showed this same thing.
